Standing back up and twisting to her right were Edward and the cart were and grabbed a wrench. She could use her bare hands if needed, but she actually liked using the assortment of tools she had bought for their garage. Any human action was always a bit comforting for her. She reached forward again and started removing the nuts that held the cables in place; her mission was to replace the spark plugs, which were still factory stock from when the car was first purchased. As she worked, she listened to Edward trying to explain himself.
Of course, Rosalie was secretly pleased that Edward could not find a mate more suitable than herself. Though now that she was unavailable, what would Edward do? Certainly there was no one more perfect that she was. But Edwards last statement stopped her in her tracks. No soulmate? Though there were times where she and Edward were the picture of sibling rivalry, she definitely was concerned. She could not stand the thought of being alone, and had almost panicked when Carlisle thought that she might want it once her transformation was over. How could someone stand this eternal damnation alone? She could not imagine it.
Was there really no hope for her brother? Of course, he had the rest of them as a family, but Rosalie could not imagine her life without Emmett. Suddenly finding her voice tender and almost timid, she spoke so low that only Edward would have heard her despite their mother's excellent hearing. "You don't really think that, do you?" What was probably worse than being alone, was having the knowledge that you would always be alone. She didn't want to believe that her brother's thoughts were so hopeless.

Esme relaxed as she heard Rosalie and Edward's tone and words change. She knew it was because they knew she was listening, but that was okay with her, as long as they were being civil with eachother.
She finished the book and set it back down on it's original table. Her golden eyes inspected the large living room. She admired her the way she had restored the house, and appreciated the help that her family had given with the project. Esme stood up in one quick, lithe movement and then quickly sped up the stairs to the second story.
Esme glided soundlessly and quickly through Carlisle's large office and through another door that led to her own study. Upon entering the study she stoped and glanced around the room, taking everything in. A large, slanted desk was on the far left wall, covered with many blueprints, a tall wooden stool sat in front of the desk. To the right of the desk was a wooden set of drawers filled with various tools; pencils, rulers, erasers. The walls were adorned with pictures of the different places Esme had restored in her many years.
Esme continued to her desk and sat in the stool. She leaned over the many blueprints and skimmed through them, looking for a current project to take on.

As Edward watched her working on his car he realized he had been standing a bit too still. Humans were so fidgety, it would look abnormal. It surprised him sometimes how easily he could fall out of the habits of acting human. They hadnt been away from school for that long and already he was needing to remind himself to practice the little things. Rationally he knew he was overworrying a bit. He always felt the need to be more perfect in their act the first year in a new place. It was when he felt the most attention would be on them.
He shifted his weight a bit, trying to loosen up his muscles as he stared at the parts as Rosalie worked on them. She was such a natural with cars, even though to look at her it might be the farthest thing from your mind.
Edward didnt really want to answer Rosalie's question about whether he believed what he told her. She and the rest of his family had found their loves, so he knew it was hard for them to believe what he did. He nodded silently in answer to her question. He knew it wasnt what she wanted to hear but it was the truth. "It's been almost a century...I have family, that's enough."

Working swiftly, Rosalie's hands moved confidently and without hesitation despite acknowledging Edward's small nod in the affirmative. Her thoughts, however, were more erratic than her seemingly untroubled expression. Of course, it just so turns out that she was nearest the one person in the world that could see through her pretense. If her heart were still alive, this would have been the moment where Rose would have felt it jolt and ache. She wondered how it would feel to believe such a thing, to be hopeless and fundamentally believe that one would spend eternity with no companion. The thought alone produced a hollow sensation within her that made her uncomfortable. It was unacceptable. It could not be true, not for her brother who was so good.
Staying silent for just a bit longer, Rosalie didn't speak until she was sure her voice would emit with the confidence she wanted to give her brother. "Well, I don't." Though it had taken her effort to voice it, she truly did believe it. "Our family is great of course," she conceded, her eyes never leaving her work, unable to look at Edward. "But there is someone," she promised. She remembered her days before Emmett and wondered if that was what Edward was thinking. To be such a monster in a world that wasn't supposed to exist, how would anyone ever find love? How are you sure you even deserve it? The doubts had ended with Emmett, and she only hoped that something was in store for Edward.

Edward watched his sister's reaction to his affirmation. Her thoughts were erratic and not completely formed but he could get the gist of what they were. She was uncomfortable with the idea of his beliefs. He knew that she wanted more for him. His whole family wanted him to have someone like they all did. But how did a moster fall in love? Didnt you need a soul to love? Edward's thoughts on his own lack of a soul didn't extend far enough to believe anything negative towards the love the others had. He could see with his own eyes it was real enough, even if his own heart felt it was not possible for him to achieve.
"Our family is perfect, and I'm lucky to have you all. I'm lucky that with what we are, that I'm even capable of loving my family" He said believing that was a gift. " You may have found someone, but I've never felt close. " He told her, trying to explain why he felt there was no one in the world he was meant to be with.

Rose couldn't resist sighing softly, a human reaction that sometimes overcame her. The seven of them had discussed their nature to the deepest degree. Though countless years had been spent on the subject, no one had come to a theory that they could place their beliefs in. The the existence of their souls was something their conjoined thoughts hadn't been able to come to terms with. However, Rosalie knew that Edward sincerely thought their souls were lost forever; they were monsters.
She, at times, was afraid she thought the same. But she found comfort in her family and Emmett, and wondered if those things were possible without a soul. She couldn't imagine it. She couldn't imagine an eternity of more than one darkness. "Well," she continued, pushing her more doubtful thoughts aside, "I guess you have a while to figure that out," she told him with a small grin. It was a cop out at worst, a cowardly change of subject at best, but she wasn't sure this was the time for such a discussion.

Edward wondered for a moment if it would have been better to lie to his sister. To give her some reassurance that he didnt feel hopeless on that subject. But his family didnt lie to each other like that. He knew that Carlisle had wondered whether or not he had changed Edward at too young of an age, if that was why he couldnt find love. Though Edward wondered if that was true, he would never blame his father. He had done what he had thought was best, and saved Edward's life.
Edward laughed as Rosalie commented how he would have time to figure that out. "Yes, plenty more first days of high school to go through figuring that out" He told her shaking his head. "I can't believe I have to be a freshman again" He commented trying to lighten the mood.

Edward's heartfelt laugh told Rosalie that their conversation was on safer territory, for now. She joined his laughter when she thought of her hundred year-old brother in league with 15 year-old humans. It was beyond ridiculous, even though all of them sometimes enjoyed pretending to be a teenager again. "I guess being Sophomore has only marginal benefits," she admitted. The first year in a new town was sometimes difficult. Rosalie, Jasper and Emmett most certainly did not look 16 years old, despite their acting abilities and the help Alice gave them with appropriate attire. Emmett was huge and muscular, Jasper wasn't so much but it was still apparent that he was much more experience than a 16 year old, and Rosalie was... Rosalie. She was tall, elegant, statuesque. It was hard to downplay her perfect features to that of a child.
"But at least we get to stay here a few years," she amended quickly. She looked up at the clouded sky again as she finished her job on the distributor and replaced the cap.

"If nothing else it sounds better to be a sophomore" Edward told her. As much as Edward didnt like the idea of being a freshman again he knew overall it would be better for all of them. When they started out younger, they were able to stay longer. Edward had been to Forks before, he enjoyed it here and wasn't in any rush to leave. There were days when he wondered however how he was going to be able to pull off being 15 again. He tried to copy the mannerisms of his more immature classmates but if he did too much it would look unnatural for him.
"Yeah, that's the only good part about it. I like Forks, very little sun, and we dont have to travel too far for hunting trips" Edward commented.

There were very few things that Rosalie and Edward agreed upon. This, however, was one of them. In their many years, all of them had been able to exist with a little peace of mind in places that allowed them to interact with their environment. Places like Forks and Denali were the ones they tried to go to; be as normal as possible. Forks had the great benefit of being surrounded by the wilderness. Hunting was as casual as stepping outside their home. When remembering the last time they were in the area, she remembered loving it and hoped the experience was similar.
Once she started to compare her memories, she realized that it wouldn't be quite the same. In many ways, it was better. Their family was bigger, stronger and closer. With Jasper and Alice joining them, they had filled a role none of them had realized that had been voided. But this particular area may bring some discomfort to a bigger vampire family. Rose picked up her head from inside the hood and gave her brother a doubtful look, concentrating on her train of thought. The Quileutes. Would they know there were more of them? The Chief was no longer alive by now, but they had been assured that the terms of the treaty would be their culture's inheritance, passed along the generations.

Edward smiled as he saw Rosalie's memories of the town. Much like his own, they were happy here. It was a good place to live, even if it was a bit boring (and their expensive cars stood out amongst the rest). It was Alice and Jasper's first time living in Forks, and the others had told them plenty of stories before coming here. He hoped this time around would live up to the memories that they had in the past.
Edward looked over at Rosalie as she looked up at the car and gave him a doubtful look. She was no longer thinking of the pleasant memories they had here. She was thinking of the Quileutes. He was having the same worries that she was about the tribe. Edward didn't trust them to keep up their half of the treaty as much as Carlisle had trusted them. "We'll stay away from La Push" He told her, hoping this would be all they needed to keep from any troubles with the reservation.

"Of course," she retorted sourly. "But will they stay away from us?" Rose had only been a witness to the treaty when it was being agreed upon, much like the others. Carlisle and Ephraim Black where the ones that had discussed its terms and limitations. She knew her family was more than capable and willing to keep to their side of the boundary, it was the Quileutes she was more concerned about. At the time, her senses were drowned by the unpleasant odor that was associated with the Quileute elders; a definite sign that they were not friendly to their kind. But past the odorous distraction, it was their eyes that Rosalie hadn't been able to get over. They held suspicion, fear, and more predominantly, hatred. Their legends had conditioned their reaction; it was benevolent of the chief to be so diplomatic with his natural enemies.
Leaning into the hood again and slipping her hand in just to check the tightness on a few belts, Rosalie allowed her irritation take root. She didn't want to be something worthy of fear and hate, and though the Quileute mentality was an appropriate one it still bothered her. "Do you think they'll have a problem with Jasper and Alice?" Once they saw Carlisle take post at the Hospital, they would know they were back, and eventually discover that there were more. Ugh, I want them to come here and tell me they have a problem.

Those dogs will stay away if they know what's good for them. Edward thought, but decided against saying it aloud. "The terms of the treaty were that they would. If they don't, we'll handle the situation like we always do. I wouldn't worry about it Rose" Edward told his sister gently. "Besides if we're near any of them, I'll know if they're thinking of doing something stupid"
Edward knew that the Quileutes finding out about Jasper and Alice could become a problem, especially if they didn't wait to hear an explaination from the Cullens first. "We didn't break the treaty so they shouldn't...but the mutts might. They come here with a problem, we're a united front against them" Edward hoped it wouldnt come to a fight, but if he did, he wasn't afraid. His family was strong, and they had every right to live here, they had done nothing wrong.

Of course Edward was right. Much to her irritation, he usually was. "Well at least we're only dealing with humans this time around," she answered, giving into the logic. It's not like any of them were a challenge, but it was much easier to live somewhere when there was no risk of being exposed. "The shape-shifters have either passed away or are uncommonly old by now."
For the smallest fraction of a second, Rosalie's thoughts lingered on the fate of the Quileute elders. She tried to pull them back, a reaction she usually had in Edward's presence, but she knew it was too late and her thoughts had betrayed her. She wondered what had been their cause of the death. Or if it had been painful. Had their families mourned their loss? How many children or grandchildren had survived them? Had they inherited their long, think hair and dark, wise eyes? While the Quileutes tainted their life in this area with the slightest ounce of worry, she couldn't resist the envy she felt. Luckily for her, her mind was able to entertain both sets of feelings.
Quickly, finding her next distraction, Rose quickly counted the weeks since the last oil change and decided that the time was close enough. The fuel injectors were to follow, and then she'd play with the turbo, saving the best for last.

"Yeah" Edward nodding, knowing that was a good thing, not having to deal with the shapeshifters anymore. "Maybe if they didn't pass along the treaty to whatever ancestors are left...they might not even realize we're anything...different" He said with some hope. They were able to blend in among other humans, if they didn't have previous knowledge of the Cullens it could actually work in their favor.
He could hear Rosalie's thoughts about the Quileute elders that they had met so long ago. He knew she didn't like when he monitored every one of her thoughts so he focused instead on his own thoughts of the issue. He wondered if they had encountered anymore vampires since the Cullens left Forks. If the shapeshifters had met with other vampires, perhaps this would influence how they felt about the treaty. Maybe it would be off. But surely by now, anyone who they had met had long passed on, and if they had told the story of meeting vampires to the rest of their tribe, would they even believe them?
