It was a gorgeous day for many reasons, and Rosalie's intricate and expansive vampire mind was able to contemplate and enjoy each reason to its full extent as she flitted out of the Cullen house towards their garage. As she stepped out, she stumbled upon reason number one. She looked up and saw the perpetual overcast that blessed Forks, Washington the vast majority of the time. Rose had been delighted when they'd decided to come back. They'd been gone for decades and it was safe for them to return without running the risk of them being recognized. Walking out in broad daylight as she did this very moment almost allowed her to feel human.
Walking briskly, as only one of their kind could do, towards the Cullen garage, she came across reason number two. Upon their return to Forks just a few days earlier, Rosalie had convinced Edward to let her play with his Volvo. Of course, it was an excellent machine already, but she just wanted to fiddle with some components since it would be their main form of transportation. Which brought her to reason number three. In just a few short weeks, Rose and her siblings would be attending Forks High School with the rest of the teenage humans. One would think that the routine was tiresome, but it was something to do while they all enjoyed living in a town that made them feel comfortable. And for Rosalie, she enjoyed seeing the familiar look of envy on the plain faces in High School as they saw her and walked by.
Walking to the Volvo, she swiftly seated herself and started the engine to pull it out of the garage just a bit. Bracing the emergency brake and leaving it idle on neutral, Rose closed her eyes and listened to the hum of the engine, deciding which modification to start with. Yes, this was a good day.

Edward didn't have to be a mind reader to know what Rosalie would be up to. She seemed all too perky this morning and knew she'd be taking advantage of his agreeing to let her play around with his car. He knew that Rosalie was good with cars. He really couldnt deny that. But he still wanted to watch whatever she was up to. If he had inadvertantly annoyed her this week, she could easily take it out on his car.
Edward could hear the roar of his engine as he approached the garage, seeing her pull it out just a bit before putting it into neutral. He folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the side of the garage as he watched her.
"So...what do you have in mind for it?" He asked curious.

Over the steady hum of the rumbling engine, Rose heard the approach of another. In the same thought, she was able to determine that the footsteps belonged to Edward, making it unnecessary to open her eyes. His granite arm produced the smallest of thuds against their garage, and Rose felt a bit of annoyance creep into her mood. Are you out here to supervise or something?, she thought sourly to him. He was, of course, almost as competent with cars as she was, but he had a way of butting in when he felt like it.
Sighing in resignation, she knew Edward wasn't going to go away. So she imagined the engine of the Volvo in her mind, mentally picking it apart and concentrating on the distributor, fuel injectors and a few parts that would allow a nicer burst of acceleration. Just for starters., she thought, with a grin playing on her perfect lips. She couldn't predict a reason why he would object. He loved the thrill of any form of speed just like the rest of them. But then again, Edward had an uncanny ability to be impossibly annoying at times.

Edward didnt respond to her comment about him being out here to supervise. Instead he just gave a crooked smile, not caring that her eyes were closed so she wouldnt have any idea he was doing so. He knew Rose could handle the mechanics of the car, but he still was here to supervise, and just to see what was going to be done to his car.
"Hmm" He nodded as her mind began explaining to him what she was planning to do with the engine. He wondered how fast she'd be able to get the car to go, and he was looking forward to testing it out. "Just make sure when you're done all those pieces go back together" He teased, knowing he didnt have to worry about her not knowing how to put it back together. But she was his sister, he couldnt make things too easy for her. "Want some help? Or is my watching enough."

Hearing his passive 'Hmm' Rose tainted her thoughts with another dose of annoyance, but she couldn't resist the grin that appeared on her face when he teased her lightly. Her mind touched on the possibility of fiddling with the turbo, and she cataloged it for later when she'd done the preliminary tune up. You can just watch and marvel at my genius, she teased back as her grin grew, that always helps. She also pictured the tool cart they had in the corner of the garage, asking him to bring it to the hood of the Volvo, wanting just a few more restful seconds to enjoy the humming and subtle vibration of the car in idle.
Sighing softly, she wondered if Emmett was back from hunting. He'd felt the urge to find himself a few bears nearby, sort of a 'Welcome Back' present for himself.

"Ah stroking the ego, I can do that...though it hardly seems you need someone to remind you what a genius you are, among your other better than normal qualities" Edward said hinting at her vain sense, but also with enough sweetness to his voice that it could be considered sucking up. Afterall he did want his car to go faster. Faster was always a plus with them.
As he watched her thoughts he saw the tool cart she had indicated. "Your wish is my command" He told her, strolling over to the corner. He could have gotten there and back in a second, but he saw no need to rush it so instead moved at a more human pace. Plus it was always good practice, especially with starting at school again, they needed things to look perfect. He moved the cart over to the hood of the car.
Traces of Emmett filtered through her thoughts. They had such love for each other. His whole family was in love, leaving him the odd man out. But he was happy for them, they all deserved it. "He'll be back soon" He told her softly.

Unable to resist, Rose's musical laughter filled the cabin of the Volvo. Well, can you really blame me? she added lightly, though she knew it was true. In almost a century, she had never come across another being, supernatural or otherwise, that compared to her in beauty. If she wasn't vain enough in her first life, she was impossibly full of herself now even after decades of perspective. She then opened her eyes now that Edward had decided to play nice and bring the tool cart to her. She almost chided him for moving at such a lazy pace, but remembered that it was intentional and that she probably should start doing so as well. It wasn't hard pretending to be human, but there was no harm in getting all the practice in. Their human facade was vital to their lifestyle.
Knowing that it would take another minute or so before the Volvo really warmed up to an efficient idle against the cold Forks atmosphere, Rose leaned back and let Edward's words console her, if only slightly. I know, she thought with longing. She knew Edward was right, but it was always difficult being apart from Emmett. It was the same for the rest of her family when being apart from their mate savce Edward, who after almost a century, was still alone. Suddenly stumbling upon a favorite method of disturbing Edward's calm and polite disposition, Rose giggled, You know, Tanya was so sad to see us go again. She mentally brought up the last image she had seen of their Alaskan cousin when they had departed to come back to Forks. She had bid everyone a safe trip, but as always had shamelessly prolonged her farewell with Edward for as long as he would politely allow.

Hearing Rosalie's laugher made him smile. He loved seeing his family happy and he'd do anything to keep them that way. "No, I can't " He said shaking his head. There was no denying that Rosalie was beautiful. More than that she was stunning, more so than other vampires even. She had every right to be vain. He was just as cocky about his speed, being faster than the others.
Edward could feel Rosalie's longing in her thoughts about Emmett. They were lucky to have each other, he was glad that Rose had found Emmett to bring him into their family. When her thoughts turned to Tanya he let out a sigh, a very human reaction. "Yes, I'm sure she'll miss us all" He said focusing on them as a family rather than her obvious preference towards him. He felt a little guilty whenever they stayed with Tanya, worrying that he was just making things more difficult for her, even though he had made his feelings clear. "She mentioned visiting sometime, once we're more settled here"

Ignoring his evasion, she focused on Tanya's poorly masked attempt to keep Edward in her farewell embrace just a little longer. Yes, they will miss us as we always miss them, she conceded, though not giving up on the gradual direction of her teasing. The Denali Clan was the only other coven they'd encountered that refrained from drinking human blood; they were considered family and respected equals in their respect for human life. She is always glad to see us and sad to see us go... some more than others of course. She smiled again, looking at his expression for any hint of vexation. It wasn't likely to stop her from teasing him, she was actually looking forward to any reaction.
A visit would be nice. She is always interested in the any additions to your music collection. Of course music would only be the assumed motivation for Tanya to enter Edwards room. The look in her eyes whenever she watched Edward, an image Rosalie was focusing on at the moment, indicated otherwise.

Edward could see in Rosalie's thoughts that she was picturing the last hug that Tanya had given him. He remembered her not wanting to let go. His eyes tightened a little in a half cringe. It had been awkard for him, knowing what she was feeling, and hoping for. His cringe quickly turned to a glare as she mentioned how she was more sad to see some of them go then others.
"You're enjoying this too much" He told her. "She'll get over me, quickly I'm sure" Edward did actually hope Tanya found someone soon. He didnt want to hurt her everytime they went for a visit. He always saw that same hope in her eyes, the way she watched him out of the corner of her eye to see if anything about the way he acted towards her had changed; always trying to see if there was any hope for them.
Edward saw the image Rosalie focused on as she talked of the visit. "I'm not interested in her, Rose, and I've told her that. I just hope you're not encouraging her" He said warningly.

Chuckling softly, Rose watched Edward react as she hoped he would. It wasn't hard to get him a little miffed, it was just a matter of knowing how to do it. After being siblings for almost a century, Rosalie knew her brother incredibly well. How could I not enjoy myself when you so readily come to arms whenever someone teases you? It's just too easy sometimes, brother. She shook her head when he tried to shy away Tanya's feelings, hoping that she would get over him. She's been like this for decades, Edward, she's not budging. She quickly thought of the last couple of times they were in Denali.
Rose heard the slightest change in frequency in the idling engine, alerting that it was running on a nice warm temperature and at an optimum level. She quickly registered this new sound in her mind and kept it at bay for comparison after each modification. She turned the engine off as Edward continued to speak, finding her head had snapped up and her face contorted into a beautiful snarl of annoyance at his words. She quickly got out of the car and almost forgot to be gentle with the door, but managed to slam it with what appeared forceful for a human. Returning Edward's expression with her own glare, she spoke aloud in a angry, yet still musical tone, "Don't be ridiculous, Edward. I may tease you but I wouldn't go out of my way to hurt Tanya's feelings like that." While Tanya was a strong personality, the rejection Edward offered did hurt her and Rosalie considered her a beloved cousin. Seeing her upset was not something she particularly like and Edward always insinuating that she was heartless always made Rosalie defensive.

It was true that Rosalie did know exactly how to push Edward's buttons. Out of all of his siblings, she probably knew how to get to him the best. Maybe because they had been brother and sister the longest. He raised an eyebrow annoyed as she spoke of how easy it was to get him riled up. "I'm glad I could provide some entertainment for you, dear sister"
He sighed as she spoke, or rather thought, of Tanya's resolve in her feelings. He had hoped when they first met that it would be a fleeting thing, a crush at most, but he knew she felt the same way each time they saw each other. "I'm not budging either" He replied.
Edward noticed Rosalie's expression change immediately. In his uncomfortableness with the subject, he had offended her, something he hadn't been trying to do. When she spoke to him aloud this time, her voiced seemed louder than the level he had heard in her head, it got his attention. "I know you wouldnt do anything to hurt her, not intentionally." He told her softly with a look asking for forgiveness at the insinuation he had made previously.

The thoughts of how nice it was to be back in Forks, Washington flooded Esme's head. Esme was partial to Forks, as was most of her family, because of the mostly overcast days. She felt more human here.
She flitted around the room that was now Carlisle and her's, finishing up with some of her own personal decorative touches. Carlisle and Esme had a room on the very top floor, close to the stairs, of the large, elegant, white house. She finished up the room with a large, full length mirror, framed with an elegant and ornate floral design carved from rich, mahogany wood that she positioned next to her closet door.
Esme sighed and took a step back to look at herself in the mirror. She brushed back a strand of her caramel colored hair from her face. She was dressed in elegant designer clothes that her adopted daughter Alice insisted upon. Looking in the mirror and thinking about one of her adopted daughters brought Esme's other daughter into her mind.
While Esme was inhumanly beautiful, like the rest of her family, no one compared to Rosalie. Esme smiled at the thoughts of her daughters. She turned toward the bedroom door and used her practiced human human to reach the door. Continuing that pace to walk down the two flights of stairs that led to the bottom story. It didn't hurt to practice this pace more, even though she knew how to keep a very convincing human facade from many years of practice.
While walking down the stairs she couldn't help but eavesdrop on a conversation that sounded like it was taking place in another room, but in reality it was taking place outside in the Cullen's garage. It was Edward and Rosalie, talking cars again. Esme smirked and rolled her eyes. Those two and cars, she thought to herself.
Esme continued to the large, front room and sat on a couch grouped in front of a large, silver t.v. screen. Esme grabbed a large, hardcover book that sat on the glass coffee table in front of her. The book was left there kind of as a prop, even though it was used; they couldn't leave the house too uncluttered, it would seem unnatural. The book was another of her many design books, and even though she had this one memorized she liked to look through it from time to time.
She flipped through the pages at top speed, taking in the text and pictures. About halfway through the book she paused; she was eavesdropping again. She heard Rosalie's tone change and the hard slam of a car door. She listened harder to the words; they were talking about Tanya again. Esme sighed in frustration; she could guess that Rosalie was trying to push Edward about the Tanya thing and that Edward had said something in return that had offended Rose. Why must they do that to eachother? she questioned in her head. She shook her head, and the corners of her lips turned down in a frown, but she continued with flipping through the pages of the heavy book.

Holding her ire in place as she kept Edward under her glare, Rosalie's senses detected movement from within their home. It started from Carlisle and Esme's room and ended with a low flitter of page-turning in their open first floor. Recognizing Esme and guessing what her reading material was, she held her glare for just a second as she walked to the front of the car. Finally releasing her stare, she opened the hood and turned her back on Edward and made an effort to calm her thoughts. Rose loved her mother and knew that if she didn't come out now to ask them what they were arguing about, she was slyly ask them later, trying to make peace between them. She didn't want to upset her with their arguments, though there were inevitable at times. Leaning over slightly, Rosalie stretched forward and deftly pulled the plastic distributor cap, laying it to the side. Using her opposite and she gently tugged on the base on the cables to make sure none of them were loose. The action would have severely burned a human, but only produced a mild tingle on Rosalie's eternal fingertips. Finding her mind occupied a little now, she was sure she would be able to speak without alerting Esme. "So, what's wrong with Tanya anyway?" she asked, genuinely curious. Tanya was as beautiful and intelligent as the next vampire, save Rosalie, and her nutrition planned mirrored their own. They were the only other family that lived like them and she couldn't imagine Edward choosing a companion that insisted on a human diet. Everyone else in their family had found a companion and Edward was the last to find his happiness in their cursed life. Cringing internally, Rosalie remembered when Carlisle had confessed to her and Edward that he had brought Rosalie into their family in hopes that they would be together. Neither had taken offense by the notion; by then Rosalie had already found Emmett and Edward loved his siblings dearly, but the thought had been surprising. Rosalie and Edward had bickered since the very first day.

As Rosalie started her work on the car, Edward listened for a moment for their mother. He knew she had heard he and Rosalie arguing moments earlier. He could hear the frustration in Esme's thoughts, hating to make her feel that way. He always hated being caught by Esme in a fight with a family member. He never liked fighting with any of them to begin with, but Esme always felt just as upset by the disagreement as the two involved. He was disappointed in himself for reacting back to Rosalie the way he did, and in turn hurting both his sister and his mother to some extent.
He turned his attention back to Rosalie who had been quiet for a moment and who also seemed to not want to argue anymore after becoming aware of their mother's presence. He listened to her question about Tanya, knowing that this time it was out of curiousity and not trying to get under his skin.
"There's nothing wrong with Tanya" Edward told her. Or with you. He wanted to add, but kept his thoughts to himself, not wanting to open up old wounds. He knew that although Rosalie had never been interested in him, it had offended her that he hadn't been interested in her as she was used to.
"Tanya is...nice. A friend." He said shrugging, not able to think of anything about her that would be reason for a normal person to not wat a relationship with her. But then he would never be normal again. He had often wondered if that was the reason he never felt anything. How could the monster he was fall in love? "Maybe not all of us have soul mates"
