(I would say no more than a year before Twilight. Embry is about 14/15ish)
Judging by the approximate distance of the purple clouds off the coast, Embry guesstimated that he had about another hour or so before it would start raining again. The recent set of showers had ended just a bit ago, and he'd taken his chance and mindlessly made his way to the shores of First Beach. Like most locations in the Quileute Reservation, the beach was only a walking distance away from his doorstep. Taking the shortest route there and making a beeline to the spot he'd imagined when he thought of his plan, he found what he was looking for shortly.
Embry's faded sneakers thudded softly against the multi colored stones of the beach until he stopped in front of a small group of fallen tree trunks that people used as seats when they came to hang out by the beach and start a fire. It was the kind of wood he was looking for. Taking an appraising look at the fallen wood, he tried to think of what exactly he was going to carve out of it. This kind of wood was not ideal for any kind of carving, really, but he usually tried out his idea on something with less quality before trying it on something permanent. Most of his friends had learned the skill as part of their tradition, but Embry wasn't as talented as some of them. Jacob was pretty good with his hands in general, and Billy was practically a pro. This carving was for his mother's birthday, so he wanted to get it right.
Finding a potential, dried branch, Embry bend down and wrapped his hand around it; his fingers barely got around. Using his feet as leverage, he gripped with his other hand and prepared to try to snap it off with one pull.

Katie had been down at the beach for some time, seated on a fallen log and staring out into the waves in front of her. It had been somewhat sunny when she first came, but the weather gradually deteriorated over the course of a few hours. She had been sitting there the entire time, legs bent so that her knees were pressed up against her chest. She had wrapped her arms around them and rested her chin, staring blankly out at the water. An argument with her mother earlier had driven her out of the house and she still hadn't decided to go back. The beach was calming, relaxing. It eased her anger and she spent the afternoon daydreaming.
Footsteps to her right snapped Katie's eyes away from the hypnotizing rhythm of the dark waves. She recognized Embry and smiled, pushing herself off of the log she was sitting on. She hadn't realized until then how sore and stiff she was from being immobile for so long. She rolled her shoulders once and quietly walked over to where he was, examining some driftwood at his feet.
"Need some help?" Katie asked, a smile tugging at the edge of her lips. Since her move to Forks 2 years prior, she had taking a liking to the beach and in return had made friends with some of the Quileute residents, Embry being one of them.

It was very rare that Jacob woke up late, today was one of those days. Not that Jacob had anywhere to go, but it was rather annoying to spend a good portion of the day sleeping, what a waste.
Despite having no plans, Jacob looked forward to each day. He had just finished doing his daily routine; shower, teeth brushing, the usual. It was just now that he peered through the front window; a relief it wasn't raining, but that wouldn't last.
Jacob grabbed a granola bar from the cupboard, something that required very little preperation on his part, and headed to the nearby phone. Wonder what Embry's up to today?, he thought to himself. He called his friend's house, hoping he wasn't busy and that they could hang out. Not that it mattered if he was busy, Jacob was bound to find something to do, he did have the old Chevy truck to tinker with and work on.
It was a couple rings until Embry's mom called, informing Jake that Embry wasn't in, but she thought he had mentioned something about going to First Beach. "Thanks," Jacob mumbled into the phone before hanging up. He shoved the last bite of the granola bar in his mouth, throwing the wrapper on the counter (easier than walking the three steps to the trash can), and bounded out the door.
It shouldn't be too hard to find Embry, wasn't like La Push was a huge place. The weather was nice as Jake walked down to First Beach, wrapping his long, black hair into a hair tie as he walked.

Sucking in a breath of air, Embry braced himself to pull with his weight, but just as he'd tensed his muscles to tug, a voice behind him startled him. He quickly stood up and whirled around to face the newcomer, not quite letting his grip go before he did so. "Ow," he mumbled, his hands scratched by wood. He recognized Katie immediately and broke into a friendly smile. "Er... I mean, hey!" Living in such a secluded area, and an even smaller Reservation, it wasn't hard to know everyone by name eventually. Katie had only moved to Forks a few years ago, and she appeared at First Beach as often as the other kids that came and went. Katie happened to be one of the nicer ones that visited.
Finding himself suddenly bashful, Embry looked down at the chunk of wood he was trying to dislodge with a slight fold in his brow. "Well, do you have anything handy for wood chopping?" he asked playfully. Just over Katie's shoulder, Embry saw a hint of movement. Glancing past her, he noticed Jake making his way down the beach. For a split second, Embry felt a little bit irritated, not really knowing why. But his confusion was replaced by relief. Maybe Jake would help him out... with the carving too. But not too much, he still wanted to do it himself... mostly.

Katie smirked slightly as Embry was startled by the sound of her voice, a little smug that she could be that quiet. A look of empathy replaced it when she saw him cut his hands on the wood, eyeing the splinters with a pained look on her face. "Sorry," she mumbled. "What're you up to?" She asked, pointedly looking behind him at the wood that still lay on the beach. Embry was one of the few that she had met while visiting First Beach nearly every day.
When he asked about the tools for wood chopping, she let out a small laugh, her mood slightly improving from the state it was in earlier. "I'm afraid I don't have my axe on me today, forgot it under my pillow this morning."
But his attention was distracted and Katie followed his gaze over her shoulder, looking to see what had caught his attention. She squinted her eyes to get a better look and thought she could see Jacob Black making his way towards them. She didn't know Jacob quiet as well as Embry, but knew it was just as friendly.
((Sorry its so short, my mind is on the fritz right now.))

Grinning, Embry shook his head in mock disappointment. "I hate when that happens," he said sympathetically. "Just the other day I really needed one to make a bow and arrow and my hatchet was missing. Bummer." His wide shoulders shook softly as he laughed an easy chortle at their sillyness. Katie was one of the few that would appreciate bad jokes like this one. One of the other people like that, was approaching slowly but surely.
Turning back to the reason he was on the beach in the first place, Embry gave the protruding branch a half-hearted kick. "I was just trying to get the wider part of this branch off," he answered. "I'm trying to get my mom's birthday present together." He looked up at Katie again, wondering if he sound crazy... making a present from a dead tree he found on the beach. "I know it sounds weird," he said laughing softly putting his hands up to reason with her before she even asked and shuffling his feet, "but I've got a plan." In fact, Embry was quite proud of his plan. He remembered the time his grandmother had given him a similar carving when she visited right before she passed away. Despite Embry's need to display masculinity to his friends, he happened to love the little token she'd given him. He never went without it. He hoped his mother would have a similar response.

Jacob continued to move his long legs in the direction of First Beach. He scanned the beach, straining his brown eyes to find who he was looking for.
"Aha," he muttered to himself as he caught site of Embry. But there was another person there with him. A girl. He chuckled at the thought of the crap he could start with Embry over that fact. He focused on the girl, trying to decipher who she was. She looked faintly familiar, she definitely wasn't a resident on the reservation, too white. He had seen, and met her before, but was drawing blanks at a name.
Jacob reached the edge of the beach now, climbing down some large boulders, fumbling over his feet. He definitely was not one of the more graceful people on the rez. "Hey Embry!" he called out, lifting one of his large arms in greeting. At this distance he got a better look at the girl that accompanied Embry. Katie Florence, the name suddenly popped in his head as he remembered.
He continued across the multi-hued rocks that covered the beach, quickly approaching the two of them. He grinned a huge, impish grin in her direction as he finally reached where they were, nodding his head slightly in greeting. This would surely irritate Embry, he thought quietly to himself. It was so like him to push his best friend this way, despite not having any severe interest in the girl, not that she wasn't beautiful or anything, she just wasn't Jake's type.
His brown eyes glanced from her face to Embry's hand. He arched one dark eyebrow in confusion. "What happened to your hand?" he questioned. He looked around trying to find the source of the scratch, the wound looked fresh. Then he noticed the dried branch behind Embry. He must have been trying to dislodge the bleached wood. "Trying to show off?" he asked, smirking slightly. "We both know your embarrassingly weak," he teased. He knew this probably wasn't the case, but he enjoyed poking fun at his friends, they would do the same to him.

Katie laughed lightly at his attempt at a joke, knowing hers was just as cringe-worthy. She found that her friends back at Forks High School didn't understand the definition of "sarcasm" or how to appreciate a bad joke. They were all too serious. At least with Embry - and Jacob, she realized - she didn't have to worry about being judged by what came out of her mouth or how she dressed. They were too carefree for that.
Katie listened to Embry describing what he had been doing with the log and she nodded, understanding completely. She made an effort at every special occasion to at least make an attempt at a homemade gift. It always meant more if thought and time had been put into presents instead of just money. "I believe you," she said, a grin on her face. "With the nearest shopping centre located an hour away, I don't blame you for getting creative."
She looked over her shoulder just as Jacob met up with them, muttering a soft "hey" in greeting. Despite meeting him - albeit briefly - before, she was still just as shy as ever. But when he made the jab at Embry, she couldn't help but poke at him. "Come now, Jacob, we all know even I could take you down."

As Jacob finally got closer to where he and Katie were examining the fallen wood, he saw the grin with a purpose and remembered his flash of irritation, bringing on a new one. He realized it was because Jacob had a talent of making him uncomfortable around girls, knowing he was quiter and shyer than he was. It happened irregardless of what Embry thought of them. Trying to play it cool, he rolled his eyes dramatically when Jake made a joke at his expense. A grin quickly flashed on his face as Katie casually joined in and retorted without missing a beat. Anyone that could keep up with them was definitely worth having around.
"Doesn't take much, really," he leaned in slightly towards her as if to share a secret but speaking loudly enough for Jake's benefit. "You can take him." His grin mirrored the one one Jacob's face, a reminder that he could easily turn the tables on him.

Jacob shifted his weight onto his left leg and raised his right eyebrow, looking at the two of them incredulously. "Seriously?" he questioned. "I could take you both," he teased, smirking, "At the same time." He lifted his right arm and pushed Embry hard in the shoulder, pushing him out of the way.
"What were you doing with this anyway?" he said, squatting down and grabbing hold of the bleached driftwood with his right hand. Wrapping his fingers around it. He didn't intend to break it off, but was just examining it. Jacob ran his hand down the branch before standing up, tucking his hands into the pockets of his worn blue jeans. "Don't tell me you're trying to be creative," he muttered. He turned his gaze to Katie. "He's turning metro," he whispered, leaning towards her. Of course he knew Embry could hear him, he wasn't really trying to be discrete.

Katie let out a sharp "Ha!" when Jacob insisted he could take both of them at once, "You wish." In truth though, she wouldn't stand a chance against either of them. Both had at least 30 pounds on her, easy. And while she wasn't some weakling, she was pretty sure her punches probably felt like a tap to them. The Quileute boys were all built like trees.
She brushed her blonde hair back with her hands, trying to take some of the knots out that the light wind created. When Jacob suggested Embry was turning metro, it took her by surprise and she let out a loud laugh. That one she wasn't prepared for, and her shoulders shook as she tried to stifle it. Katie cleared her throat and took a few breaths to calm down, occasionally letting out a soft giggle. It was the first real laugh she had all day and it felt good.
"Sorry," she mumbled, realizing she probably overdid it a bit. She shoved her hands in her sweater pocket and focused her gaze on the driftwood that sat on the ground in the middle of all them.

Embry's shoulder shifted only slightly under the force Jacob applied. He swiftly returned the shove back playfully, not letting the other boy get too confident. Both boys were growing swiftly and sprouting up like the trees that were neighbors. At the moment both were neck at neck, with Jacob having the slightest edge over him. Embry's blush was only slightly visible under his dark skin, but his expression gave way to a mixture of embarassment and irritation. Katie's apology to her minute betrayal only made it worse. "Hey, you're just mad because Billy still can't teach you how to match colors," he retorted.
He watched Katie pick a spot and sit on the ground, and turned again to the wood he was trying to take a chunk of, hoping his face would recover. "Actually, gimme a hand bro," he said, taking advantage of another set of hands. "I'm actually gonna make something for my mom. Don't ask me what, though, I still have no idea."

Jacob chuckled a bit along with Katie. And continued laughing when Embry poked fun at him. "Yeah, uh huh, sure. The whole matching colors deal has gone right over my head," he mumbled to Embry, "It's okay though Em, I hear that some girls like the metro type." He looked at Katie as she took a seat. "Don't they?" he asked her.
He turned his attention back to Embry. A huge grin on his face, his white teeth showing. "Sure, sure. What do you need me to do?" he asked. He looked down at the driftwood branch, it was a pretty large piece of dried wood. He pulled his hands out of his pockets and again reached down to touch the wood. "Okay, I know you told me not to ask, but seriously, how big of a thing are you makin' you mom?" he questioned.

Katie was a little spaced out when Jacob asked his question, so it took her a minute to process what he had said before shrugging her shoulders in response. "It seems like the girls of Forks tend to have a thing for anything male, they don't care much about specifics." Well, the majority of them anyway.
She took a handful of rocks and began to fiddle with them, keeping herself busy while the boys discussed the driftwood's prospective future. Despite not really doing much, Katie preferred to be at First Beach than Forks. Most girls would consider sitting on a beach boring, but she found it relaxing. Not to mention she was far away from any phone or piece of homework that could disrupt her day.

"Ehh... I doubt that includes anything related to Jake," he quipped, patting his best friend a little too roughly on the back of his shoulder. "Sorry, bro." It wasn't like the reservation kids and the Forks kids didn't mingle much, it was just an unspoken preference that they usually kept to themselves when it came to dating. Embry hadn't really thought much of it, though it was kind of hard to avoid when Katie brought it up.
Rolling his eyes at Jake, Embry could only offer a shrug. "It won't be big, but I have to make a trial run before I make the real deal. You know I'm not as good as you or Billy." He pointed out the branch he'd chosen before Katie had startled him and gave Jacob a look, wondering it the piece he'd picked out would be appropriate in the first place.
