"Whatever. I'm more man than you are," Jacob grumbled, rolling his eyes. Katie was right though, from what he's seen, some girls of Forks High School definitely would take anything male. A couple times groups of them would come down for bonfires or what not, a couple girls in particular were flirtatious toward almost every guy. "So, are you one of those girls Katie? Embry seems sure that he is a male," he said smugly. Jacob couldn't resist himself; he knew Embry would kick his butt for this one.
"You're right. You need the practice, I'm sure this branch will work. And when you mess up there are hundreds of more you can get," he replied. He took a couple steps back from his friend, to avoid any onslaught of violence he was sure to face soon.
Low and behold his clumsy, over sized feet betrayed him and he tripped over a small dried branch and landed right on his rear, scraping his arm on the multicolored rocks that covered the beach. "Ugh," he huffed, an embarrassed look on his face. But the embarrassment was wiped away as he started to laugh at himself. He sat up, loud bursts of laughter still escaping his dark lips. "Karma," he mumbled between the spasms of laughter.

Katie shook her head at Jacob's mention of being one of those girls, shuddering slightly at the mere thought of it. "Unlike most females you see hanging around Forks, I have some set of standards that I adhere to. I'm not up for jumping anything that's of the opposite sex." She went with a couple of her friends to the beach sometimes, but always found it boring or irritating, especially when she had to witness the flirting. It was like wolves going in for the kill, each one wanting to take the bite. She smirked, thinking of something that would definitely take him by surprise and glanced up at him, "Who said I liked boys anyway?"
It was barely a beat later when Jacob tripped over his own feet while attempting to back away from Embry, and Katie couldn't help but laugh at his clumsiness. Definitely Karma. He even scraped his arm in the process, making it that much sweeter. "Maybe if you tried tying your shoelaces properly, you might actually be able to stand on your own two feet for longer than 5 minutes."

"Hey," he said in mock-seriousness, "my mom totally said I was a guy. Are you calling her a liar?" He allowed a few more blows, from jake, waiting for his opportunity to present itself. "Besides, it's not like you qualify much either. No respectable human makes that kind of stench from the bathroom." He followed Jake's eyes towards the wood but playfully snapped a barely closed fist towards his side. "yea I figured I'd ruin the bad wood before I'd try it out. I still don't know what to make her, though."
Embry couldn't control the reaction that spread across his face when Katie spoke about her prefences, whether she was joking or not. "Woah, nice!" he blurted out before he could edit himself. Before he could properly be embarassed by his comment, Jake found himself on the ground laughing. Katie's light laugter triggered his own husky laugh. "If it were karma, you'd be worse off," he told him between laughs when he was able to get a breath in.

"You're probably right," he said to Embry once the laughter ceased. If karma was after him he would probably get hit by a car on his way home. He laughed a single husky laugh at the thought.
Jacob quickly pushed himself off the ground to get upright again. It was just now, while getting up, that Katie's comment registered in his mind. He raised both his dark eyebrows dubiously. "I don't see you as that kind of girl," he told her, "You're probably trying to just cater to every man's fantasy by saying that." His lips turned up in a smirk.
Jacob turned his attention back to the driftwood Embry and him were surveying moments before he made an idiot of himself. "I don't have any suggestions for ya pal," he commented, "But I guess we should remove the branch if this is the one you want." He reached down with one dark, russet colored hand and wound it around the branch. He gave it a tug, and was surprised to find that it wouldn't dislodge itself easily.

Katie laughed in response to Embry's surprised reaction to her impromptu joke, glad she was able to shock at least one of them. Jacob, on the other hand, saw through her too clearly to be surprised in any way. "You're no fun, you know that?" She told Jake, scrunching her nose up at him. "Most guys would've acted the same as Embry and would be stuck on whether or not I was telling the truth until I said otherwise, or confirmed their suspicions."
Katie went back to fiddling with the rocks in front of her, trying to think of something that Embry could make his mom. Not that she knew what she liked or even knew her at all, but it felt better than sitting there being useless while the boys pondered the same dilemma.
Her thoughts were interrupted when a low rumbling in the distance warned of an oncoming storm. It was hardly surprising. Being located so close to Forks, La Push was bound to receive the majority of their awful weather as well.

Still laughing, Embry could only shrug. By some miracle Jacob had been able to keep a level head at such a comment. Embry just reacted immediately. "Hey you can't get away with saying something like that without catching some smack," he told her, grinning, "whether it's true or not." Embry was just glad they were all familiar enough that Katie could joke around like that. Sometimes the Forks kids felt like they didn't fit in, but Katie seemed cool with them.
Embry crossed his arms and watched Jacob appraisingly as he tried to pull the branch off the driftwood on his own, and subsequently failing. "You're gonna give yourself a hernia, man," he warned. He never got a chance at giving it a shot himself since he was startled by Katie before he could try, but he figured it wouldn't be easy. "Then Katie's gonna have throw you over her shoulder and drag you to Billy in triumph."

Jacob just shrugged his shoulders to Katie's comment, hand still wrapped around the branch. He didn't pull on it though, he had already failed at his attempt to dislodge the branch with brute force.
Jacob wanted to flash Embry a vulgar hand gesture in return to his remark, but thought better of it since Katie was around. He made do with a snide comment of his own. "You're just mad because you wish it was you being flung over her shoulder." A large grin pulled the corners of his dark lips, and he arched one eyebrow. Daring him to deny it.
He flashed his brown eyes to Katie and then back to the dried wood his hand was still wrapped around. "Maybe if we both try to pull it'll come out," he said to Embry.

Katie watched the guys fiddle with the log, still completely undecided about what to do with it. She was just as uncreative as both of them and couldn't think of anything that Embry could make for his mom. The dark clouds rolled in closer to the beach, and Katie glanced at her watch. 5:20pm. Yep, she would be in trouble when she got home. Dinner was so important.
Pushing herself off the ground, she brushed the dirt from her pants and shot a glance in the direction of the storm. Turning back to the guys, she cleared her throat and realized then she was actually rather thirsty. "Hey, I gotta run. Supper's probably on the table already and the last thing I want is another argument with my parents about being late. I'll catch up with you guys later?"

Embry bent low next to Jake, taking the branch where it was exposed. He then noticed that Katie was leaving. "Okay, okay," he told her with a grin, "you don't have to carry either of us. You can just leave us here on the beach, passed out. How's that sound?" He let her give her explanation, his brow folding only slightly. He hoped she wasn't getting in trouble for going so far into La Push.
"Uh, yea I hope you're not in trouble," he said, his face falling only slightly. "You should stop by more often," he added a bit brighter. "Jake and Quil can't seem to get past the 4th grade so sometimes it's nice to have someone around that doesn't rely on farts for humor." He smiled slyly at her, ignoring Jacob altogether. He knew he was gonna pay for it once she left, though it was more like it it would be while she was still there, but sometimes the guys got absorbed with each other. He didn't want her to think that she was unwelcome.

"Oh you know you enjoy mine and Quil's sense of humor Embry," he told his friend. He released the branch from his hand and stood up straight. He looked at Katie and smiled a friendly smile. "Just gonna leave all of a sudden? Fine, fine. See how you are," he joked with her.
He reached his hand across his face, brushing a stray black hair from his face. "Embry's right. Visit the rez more often. I'm sure you enjoy spending time with a bunch of idiots like us," he told her. He put his hands in his pockets and tilted his head up at the sky. It was now that he took notice to the weather. "Storm's coming," he added, though he was sure the others had took notice to it before he had.

"Sounds good," Katie said with a grin, in reply to leaving the boys passed out on the beach alone. "I don't think I have the energy today to haul both your heavy butts back home. Its a lot of work, you know." She hoped she would be able to come back down to La Push again soon, but that depended on how much homework she let pile up on her bed and how behind she was on her household chores. "I'll try and come down more often," she added. "I like it here."
Katie nodded in response to Jake's observation of the current weather. "Another reason why I better be heading off, I'd rather not be soaked by the time I get back. Anyhow, I'll leave you two be. Hope you figure something out nice for your mom, Embry. I'll see you guys later!" And with a wave, she turned and headed back up the beach towards the road, disappearing around the bend of trees.

Embry smirked at Katie's easy playfullness with them. "See ya," he said, watching her go. "Yea way to go, Jake, scarin' her away. Next time just hide your face, bro." he joked. He turned back to the stubborn driftwood and kicked the designated branch with just a bit too much force. Ow. He flinched a little, but crossed his arms looking down at t, contemplating how to get his way.
"So yea," he mumbled. "I don't know what I'm doing." In theory, he knew. He just wasn't sure about the execution part of it.

Jacob too watched her head back up the beach and out of site. He turned and pushed Embry. "You're the one who scared her," he told him. Jake watched Embry attempt to dislodge the branch by kicking it. Jacob laughed at him, he saw him flinch in pain and he already knew how stuck the branch was. "Nice try," he laughed.
"I think we are going to need something more than brute force to get this out," he said, crossing his arms across his chest, mimicking Embry. "Sure there isn't another branch that you like?" he asked, his brown eyes scanning the beach.

Embry sighed, he wasn't sure how well this was gonna work out. But he told himself he'd at least tried. The last time he'd really given his mother something for her bithday, it was along the lines of a finger painting of her and him at the beach. He'd even mispelled 'beach' at the time. "I dunno," he replied. "Maybe we can find one like it that isn't being so stubborn. I just want to get some practice in before I try the real one, ya know?"
He was sure Jacob would give him some pointers and he trusted him enough to tell him the truth and tell him if it sucked. At least he had that in mind. If it really ended up to be terrible, he'd have to start thinking all over again.

"If you want this one we can get it out," he told him, "I'll just run up to my house and grab something to get it out with." He looked down at the branch. "And if you want to practice, maybe you should start with an uglier branch? This one looks pretty good, we could always take it out and save it for the final project," he added.
Billy, Jacob's father, was good at carving things from wood and had taught Jacob a few things over the years. Jacob wasn't any good compared to his father though. But he knew if that either Embry or Jacob wanted some assistance he would surely help.
"You should probably figure out what you're going to make too," he said, "I'm sure if you need any help Billy can give some suggestions or help you. He's a lot better at this than the both of us."
Jacob looked up at the sky again as he heard another crack of quick approaching thunder. "But whatever we do, we should do it quick," he said quietly still looking up at the dark clouds. "We can take the practice branches up to my house and start carving?" his suggestion came out as a question.
