Embry grinned at his friend and nodded his head. Why hadn't he thought of that before? "Yea let's take a few so I can ruin them all before I try it out for real," he told him with a grin. He might as well get some practice in since he didn't do it very often, and at least Jake said Billy would help out. He wasn't sure how Billy was so good at it. He was always swift and delicate, something Embry wasn't sure he'd ever accomplish that level of skill. "But I still don't know what to make her," he added, remembering his bigger problem. "What would a mom want?"

Jacob walked along the beach, still in hearing distance of Embry, picking up a couple decent branches for practice. After grabbing a few he turned back to look at his friend.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. What is your mom's favorite animal?" he asked. Jacob had never made Billy anything, at the thought he felt a little guilty, so he didn't have any brilliant suggestions. But he had made a few little pieces that he wasn't very proud of. A couple of them had been different native wild animals; eagles, deer, birds.

Embry suddenly uncomfortable and more at a loss than before. When he'd thought of this particular guesture, he'd been so excited that he'd actually come up with a good idea that he hadn't completely thought it through. "I don't know, really," he admited. "I think she likes panthers. Something about being sleek or whatever." He joined Jacob in picking up a few stray branches, trying to find the thicker ones. His mind tried to remember the proper way to start the general shape of a general four-legged creature, glad that still knew and hoping it would't turn out too bad.
"So how's Billy?" Billy Black was considered the more revered elder of the Quileute tribe and Jacob's father. Embry got along with him pretty well, he'd always been nice to him and his mother since they'd moved here from the Makah reservation.

"Gee, don't even know your own mom's favorites," he teased. "What kind of son are you?" Jake turned in the general direction of his house, the colored stones crunching beneath his feet.
"Billy's doing fine," he answered, "His usual self." Jacob tried to remember what Billy had been doing before he left. Jake wasn't even sure, he hadn't seen him at the time. That was unusual, seeing as though Billy was usually up before he was.
"To tell you the truth," Jacob added, "I haven't seen him today. I should probably go make sure he didn't fall out of his chair or something." He picked up his pace in worry.

Embry felt a little bad for not knowing his mother better, but she also knew that she'd like anything he gave her. She tended to do the really embarassing mom thing where she cried whenver Embry did something significant. He remembered his mother's tendency to love anything good he did, and his worry subsided for the most part. He would try out the panther and see how much it sucked before he tried giving it to her.
Embry nodded, hearing nothing new about Billy. The old man had taken to being in a wheel chair. Though the sight itself appeared to have weakened him, he still seemed to carry that authoritative air that was coupled with his place in thr tribe. Embry took his cue from Jake and picked up the pace, headed towards his house. "I'm sure he's just hangin out," he told Jacob, giving him a grin. Billy was pretty cool for an adult, he was sure that whatever he was up to, it wasn't anything to be worried about.

"You're probably right," Jacob said, slowing his pace. He turned to his friend, both of their hands were full of dried wood. He continued in the direction of the small red house, which he could now make out in the distance. Surely Billy wouldn't mind assisting the boys in their projects.
"How's your mom?" Jacob asked.

Embry was glad Jake had taken his words seriously. Though he definitely understood that Jake was taking care of his father, much like Embry took care of his own mother at times, he also knew Billy was a very strong person. "My mom's doing ok," he told him. "She complains a lot about how messy the store is lately, but I guess it's only recent that people are messing with the shelves or something." Though she complained sometimes, Embry knew that she liked her job and loved the customers, he figured it was just something to talk about. "She wants to go visit the Makah rez soon," he continued, smiling this time. "She keeps wanting me to meet our family... or so she says. But we always end up running into some random girls. I think she's trying to hook me up or something, it's embarrassing, man." Even as Embry confided with one of his best friends, his russet skin deepened at his mother's ploys to get him friendly with the Makah girls.

"That's good," Jacob told him, "I would complain too if people kept messing with shelves. That's got to get so annoying. Sucks that you have to listen to it though." They were just reaching the front yard of the Black House. Jacob crossed his front yard in the direction of the front porch.
"That sucks," Jacob laughed, "Who knows though, maybe you'll meet some hot girl? Then again, they might think you're a mommy's boy." Jacob laughed again, setting his branches on the porch of his house. "Sorry," he quickly added, "I bet it is embarrassing. If Billy ever did that to me...." Billy hadn't yet embarrassed him in front of girls. But Jake was waiting for the day. He thought of it as kind of inevitable. Parents always found a way to embarrass their children.

Embry couldn't laugh with Jacob. Joking around with his best friend didn't make it seem that bad, though it certainly was embarrassing around his mother. "Yea, man. It's not like she's trying to be sneaky about it either," he elaborated, shaking his head in mock shame. "She introduces me to some of these girls like she's already picked out their wedding dress." He pictured the last girl his mother had tried to impose on him and internally cringed. "Billy would never do that to you," he said confidently. "He actually likes you."
He knew his mother loved him of course, he just didn't know how to nicely tell her to back off. She always managed to embarrass him when they went to visit the other Makahs. One day he'd just have to put his foot down. He followed Jake into his house, wondering where Billy was, carrying his wood.

Jake couldn't help but laugh more as Embry explained how his mom introduce the girls to him. The laughter consumed him as he pictured everything in his head, wrapping one of his arms around his waist as the spasms of hilarity continued. "Sorry," Jacob said between the laughter, "I don't mean to laugh, but it is funny." He let a couple more muffled laughs escape before straightening himself out and looking at Embry.
"Really, sorry," he told him, "I just picture it all happening in my head. And oh man...." He thought back to the thoughts that had initially brought on the laughter. "Though you're right, I don't think Billy would do that to me," he said.
Jake glanced around the front room of their house, Billy wasn't there, so Jake just figured he was in his room. He'd come out soon, having heard their loud entrance. Jake turned toward the kitchen, his stomach grumbled in hunger at the thought of food in the room just a few steps away. "Hungry?" Jake asked, already walking toward the kitchen.

Embry shook his head as Jake laughed at his expense, but couldn't contain his own laughter either. He was glad that he'd told Jacob, now that they were both laughing. He was hardly upset, but his mother's imposition was getting to him little by little. He was starting to resent the way she embarrassed him, which usually got him feeling guilty afterwards. Jake laughing at him so easily ahd sort of put things in perspective for him, and it would hopefully help him take it more in stride. Though he knew Billy wouldn't embarrass Jake like his mother had, he was sure all parents had their moments. It was only a matter of time.
He noticed at the same time as Jake, that Billy wasn't around, but he was immediately distracted when his best friend mentioned food. "Yea man, actually I could eat something," he told him eagerly. "Whadya got?" It probably didn't matter, he'd take whatever was available since his stomach was now protesting.

Jacob walked to the fridge and pulled it open, he ducked behind the fridge door as he stuck his head in, looking for something to eat. They had just gone grocery shopping so everything was pretty much stocked.
"Everything," Jacob mumbled from behind the fridge door. He wasn't even sure what he wanted to eat as he looked at everything. He was half tempted to just pull it all out and just eat buffet style. Jake's stomach grumbled at the thought.

Billy rolled into the kitchen and saw his son and Embry sitting there. He saw that both the boys were hungry and smiled. "Hello there you two you come to raid our fridge again." He was happy that his son was making friends and bringing them over. That meant that Billy would not feel bad about kicking Jacob out of the house to hang with others.
Billy rolled over to her counter and grabbed a cup to get himself some water and started to sip on it before he looked at the two boys. "So what you do today and what are you eating. I think I might want some of the food to."

Jake turned in time to see Billy rolling into the kitchen. "Sorry dad," he apologized, "We're growing boys. We need our food." Jake couldn't help but laugh a little. Lately the guys and Jake were raiding each others fridges more often. They would take turns on which house they would eat at.
Closing the fridge Jake turned and leaned against it to talk to his dad. "Well I went down to First Beach to find Embry. Found him. Then we came up here," he told him. He thought back to what they had done at the beach. "Oh yeah," Jake added, "I remember what we're doing here. We actually came here to ask you for some help with a project Em wants to do for his mom. Carving."
Jake walked across the room to the edge of the kitchen, pausing there, he turned back to Billy. "You don't mind helping us, do you?" he asked. "We got all the wood we think we'd need."

Embry grinned at Jake's open invitation to the fridge. He'd just eaten recently, but his appetite had increased so much lately that he was already starting his stomach to rumble slightly. His mom kept telling him that was due to the growths spurts he was due to have for the next couple of years.
He mumbled a quick "Hey Billy" when Jake's father rolled in, ready to partake in the snacking. It wasn't until Jake brought the subject back up that he remembered his mother's present. He suddenly felt lucky to have followed Jacob home at the right time. "Yea, it's her birthday next week. I figured she'd liked something homemade, but I just haven't had much practice."
