Jessica's smile suddenly faded a little, more into a fake smile as she thought for a moment. Now, she could tell Bella and the others who she had really been thinking about lately or she could keep it to herself. How did she know she could even trust this girl? But maybe then again if she told her, that would give Bella more reason to not take a liking to Mike, not that she was worried about it or anything.
"Oh no one really..Just a few people here and there," she said and then paused and looked around and leaned in closer dropping her voice a little. "Okay fine, I sort of have been thinking of...you know Mike Newton? He's so adorable but like, don't tell anyone that," she said. "I mean..I don't even really like him like that or anything he's just like..something to look at I guess."

Bella bent her head in towards Jessica’s, feeling a curious sense of achievement at managing to making her feel comfortable enough to trust her with her girly secrets. She looked up at her with conspiratorial eyes, nodding a little. Mike Newton, that was the third member of Forks High that she could already match face to name and it worried her slightly. Mike Newton had not made his affection for her a secret, much to Bella’s chagrin, which was now increased as she discovered that Jessica already had a thing for him. She would never have considered going out with him in the first place, but now that she knew of Jessica’s preference for him she would have to actively try to redirect his affection from her to Jessica. Somehow. She grinned at Jessica.
“It can be our secret,” she assured her, with a nod and a smile. “I suppose he is quite sweet, I don’t blame you for liking him. He’s not really my type though.”
As she said those words she felt a burning desire to turn to the Cullens’ table, to that little band of freaks that had earned disdain from Jessica and curiosity from anyone who crossed them.

Jessica sat upright again and crossed her legs. She finished up her bagel that was on her plate and washed it down neatly with a drink of water.
"So who IS your type then Bella? Come on, I mean I dished my secret so now it's your turn. Anyone catching your eye so far? I mean I practically know everyone I could introduce you to anyone," she said smiling.
She wondered what type of guy a girl like Bella would go for.

Bella bit her lip and looked down, feeling the blush steal over her nose and cheeks once more. She should really have seen that one coming. She laughed a little, a dry embarrassed sound and squirmed a little bit.
“Oh, I don’t know,” she said, trying to brush it off, though she smiled at the girl gratefully. It was nice of the popular girl to take time to talk to the new girl, that would never have happened in Phoenix. She should probably try to say something, it was only polite. “I don’t really have a type, I guess, but I’m sure someone will catch my eye before long. And I know who to turn to!”
She laughed again and subconsciously inclined her head towards the Cullens’ table again, before realising was she was doing. She sat upright once she did realise, her red face increasing in intensity at her mistake.

Jessica knew she was trying to hide something but as Bella turned her head subconsciously towards the Cullen's she knew why. It was about the tenth time she looked over there and if her and Edward made any more awkward eye contact she thought she might scream. Okay not scream literally, but it was getting kind of weird.
"Yeah well when you find someone definately let me know," she said. "I'll let you know whether they're worth it or...not," she finished.

Bella’s head snapped back to its original position and she held it there in a vice-like control as she realised that her gaze had inadvertently strayed to the Cullen table once more. What was wrong with her? It simply wasn’t like her to become obsessed with a boy by looks alone across cafeteria tables! Having said that, though the bulk of her attention was taken up by the lone Cullen, it was the group of them as a whole that intrigued her. To look so similar and yet so dissimilar at the same time, it puzzled her, maybe it just said something for nurture rather than nature.
She grinned at Jessica’s offer, flashing a tiny portion of her teeth between her lips. “So, I’ve been hearing from Angela that being a new kid gets a whole lot of attention around here,” she looked down at the table for a moment, not really wanting to bring the subject up again, but she was curious. She glanced up after a moment with a small, and hopefully discreet, grin. “Which I guess means that there aren’t many joining the Forks High ranks?”

Jessica smiled at Bella as she noted her staring off descreetly again towards the Cullen table. She decided to let it go this time. She had told her what she thought of them but obviously it didn't really mean anything. Surely Edward wouldn't go for a girl like Bella if he wouldn't even consider a girl like Jess.
She snapped out of her thought when Bella spoke. "Yeah well we don't get many new kids here anyway..I mean who would chose to move to Forks unless they had to.." she began. "You're definately one of the coolest I've seen roll through here though." She gave a little smile and flung her hair back behind her shoulders. It sort of annoyed Jessica that Bella had been getting so much attention on her first day. If things like this kept up it would definately be a good thing to keep her on her side.

Bella gave Jessica a tight lipped smile, extremely sceptical that she was at all cool, never mind ’one of the coolest’. Then again, Jess did say that hardly anyone moved to Forks, so maybe it was a bit of a backhanded compliment. Bella didn’t really mind so much, after all, this seemed like a girl with a reputation to uphold, how was she to know that Bella was one of the least svelte people you could come across. She just had to stand up and fall over her feet to show her that. There was also something quite nice about talking to the popular girl as well, it was very easy, somehow, unlike the complicated rules about who and what you liked back in Phoenix.
“Yeah,” she agreed in a bit of a dark tone. “Well, with Charlie - uh, my dad - living over here, I thought it was about time I spent some time with him. I’m going to miss the sun, though.”
She sat back in her chair, maintaining two long curtains down each side of her face.

"Oh yeah that's right, you're dad's, like, one of the cop guys around here or whatever," she said. "Well, it's nice you came here to spend time with him anyway. I would miss the sun too. I've been dying for a sunny day here, It's been so long. Practically why I'm as pale as a 'friggen ghost," she said as she held up her arm a little.
"At least I'm not as pale as some of the people around here," she said. "It's a wonder what no sunlight makes some people look like."

Bella laughed a little, blushing at the mention of her cop dad. She might as well have just arrived in the police cruiser given that her father seemed to have put out some kind of public announcement about her arrival.
“Yeah, I guess I have no excuse,” she conceded, lifting one her of her almost translucently pale arms to the table top. She shrugged a little as she discovered that she was whiter than Jessica despite her long years in Phoenix’s fierce sun. It was probably all the Forks blood in her; you could take the girl out of Forks, but… She took the opportunity to glance at the Cullens once more, as Jessica‘s pointed comment was clearly directed at them. She bit her lip to hide a small grin, amused by the obvious jealousy emanating from the girl. “Oh, so have they been here for a long time then?”
She tried to ask the question innocently, and she probably managed it, but she was becoming quite self-conscious of the fact that the unusual quintet were becoming the focus of all her attention.

"I don't know how long they've been here really. I mean, they've been here since we've been at high school and everything. They weren't born here though, they moved here from someone else..like alot of people from here," she said.
"It's kind of odd though. Did Angela explain who they each are to you or just that they're the Cullens? I know you're curious to know more so you don't have to hide it. And at least it's gossiping, which is always fun," she said as she leaned in closer.

Bella nodded, thoughtfully, wondering how it could be that they were still apparently so outcast despite having been at the school for over two years. Was it really the climate that affected their complexions so completely? No one else was that pallor of white, not even her own pale skin tone could match up to their snowy tones. Maybe it was the shadows under their eyes that made them look so much whiter than the other kids. She shrugged inwardly, knowing that it was none of her business, but it was rare that you saw shadows that dark, but she supposed that a house full of courting teenagers got little sleep. She flushed a little as Jessica saw through her curiosity about the Cullens. She leaned in towards Jessica, absolutely not wanting to be caught gossiping on her first day in school.
“Oh Angela just explained to me who they all were - it’s quite striking having such a large family sitting together on the one table. You’d have thought they’d want some alone time, but if they’re all adopted and dating… I don’t know,” she couldn’t help but wonder how Edward fit into that household, it must be awkward for him. She couldn’t imagine living in such a full house, having been an only child to a single parent all her life; she could only imagine chaos.

Jessica nodded. "Yeah they're some odd ones alright. I mean I know they're all note related but still. It's odd that they all date and whatnot. And they even look similar even though they are all adopted," she said. "Like I said they're just really odd."
She did find it kind of odd that they would date within their own family. Maybe that's why Edward didn't want to date anyone else. All of them always stayed within their own family. Maybe he'd just wait for his mom and dad to adopt another girl and they'd he'd have a date. She felt bad about thinking this harshly about them but it passed. She didn't really have trouble thinking about anyone, she loved to pick people apart.

Opposing Jessica’s somewhat small-minded and malicious thoughts about why Edward wasn’t dating, Bella’s own worried that he must feel quite awkward in a house full of couples and in a school that seemed to consider him an outsider. She was surprised at the amount of space the other kids gave them, skirting around their table with feet to spare, not even nodding at them in greeting - she was used to being in an environment where beauty often meant everything. Some of the most beautiful people in her school in Phoenix were the lease pleasant in personality, and both they and everybody else knew it, but it didn’t seem to matter to some people. Was it possible that these Forks students had more depth to them? They didn’t look awful either. Well, maybe that blond one, she had somewhat of an arrogant look to her eyes, but the big, bear-like one seemed to happy enough, scarily big, but happy. Then the little pixie-like one, Alice, she thought she recalled, seemed cute; her boyfriend seemed like the quiet type and Edward? Well, Edward she couldn’t really read very well, he seemed pleasant enough, though. It wasn’t as if the family were sneering at every student that went past.
“I’m sure that’s not their intention, though,” she said, shyly, unable to adopt the same level of cynicism as her new friend. “They might just be shy…”
That sounded lame, even to her.

Jessica shrugged. Of course Bella was going to stick up for the Cullen's. She didn't even know anything about them. Everyone was always intrigued by them the first time they saw them and apparantly Bella was no exception. "Well you could be right..I guess. Well maybe either Alice or Edward will be in one of your classes this afternoon and you can find out for youreslf," she said.
She stared at the clock and wondered when lunch was going to be over.
